Tonight, the City of Providence will host a public forum where all eligible candidates seeking to be nominated to the Providence School Board will be available to share why they want to become a member for the 2024-2027 term.
“Providence School Board Members play a vital role in supporting our students and ensuring we improve educational outcomes across the city,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “I’ve had many conversations with members of our community regarding this important role and look forward to hearing more from each of these candidates.”
The call for applicants began on September 18—a longer application period than in previous years. This allowed for better engagement of applicants and a focused recruitment process that resulted in a variety of new candidates. Additionally, questions for candidates were solicited from local non-profits and partners in education to ensure questions were responsive to current needs. There are currently 2 vacant seats on the board and one school board member up for re-appointment.
“I look forward to hearing directly from prospective school board members,” said Council President Rachel Miller (Ward 13). “Why would they like to serve? What is their vision for leading Providence Schools forward? This can be an extremely challenging role, but it also can be rewarding public service, knowing you’ve helped shape the lives of our students and the school community.”
Public forum attendees will be asked to complete a survey that will collect information about the community’s educational priorities. After the public forum, The Providence School Board Nominating Committee makes a recommendation to the Mayor. The recommended candidates will then be interviewed by the Mayor throughout the course of December.
Although the School Board application period is now closed, more information about the board is available online.
