Art, Culture + Tourism, Parks Department put out call for tall evergreen to star in annual tree lighting ceremony
PROVIDENCE, RI – The City of Providence will host the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on Friday, December 1 at Providence City Hall and Saturday, December 2 at the Alex and Ani Center Skating Rink in Kennedy Plaza. To complete preparations, the City needs two spruce trees: a 35-foot to 45-foot spruce or fir tree to grace the steps at City Hall and a 15-foot to 20-foot spruce or fir tree for the Providence Rink. Residents are asked to nominate their own trees for consideration and the City will remove them from their property. Again this year, Stanley Tree Service will be generously donating crane service for the trees.
Residents can nominate their tree by sending an e-mail with a description and photo to Lizzie Araujo, Deputy Director of the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism at laraujo@providenceri.gov.
The Forestry Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation will cut the winning tree down and haul it away free of charge. The trees will be displayed on the steps of City Hall and at the Rink throughout the holiday season. The winning tree owner will be photographed with Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza in front of the tree during the lighting ceremony. Submissions must be received by Wednesday, November 15.
Deadline for tree submissions: Wednesday, November 15, 2017.
