The Providence Fire Department responds to a number of calls each year related to injuries and fires caused by the use of fireworks during July 4th festivities and parties. While some ground-based and sparkling devices are legal and available to purchase in Rhode Island, they still have the potential to cause the same devastating effects as larger and illegal pyrotechnics. Handheld sparklers burn at 1200 degrees and account for one-quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries. The careless use of fireworks is responsible for accidental fires every year, resulting in serious injuries and loss of life and/or property. The PFD urges the community to help prevent these accidents by ensuring that sparklers and fireworks do not get into the hands of a child.
The City of Providence will host their annual Independence Day Celebration at India Point Park starting at 7:00 p.m. on July 4th and we encourage you and your families to come join the festivities! Let professionals handle the fireworks and enjoy the holiday safely.
