UPDATE: In late November 2024, following an extensive community engagement process and City Council and City Plan Commission review process, Providence’s new Comprehensive Plan was approved by the City Council and signed by Mayor Smiley. The implementation of the Comprehensive Plan begins with a set of amendements to the Zoning Ordinance, which can be followed via the monthly meetings of the Providence City Plan Commission.

The once in a decade update of the PVD Comprehensive Plan calls for a robust community engagement process. From 2022-2024, the Department of Planning and Development facilitated community engagement in several formats and at multiple steps of the planning process to encourage broad participation from Providence’s diverse stakeholders.

Click here to review a summary of what we’ve heard so far. Methods have included:

  • Citywide Open House: In 2024, we held a large, interactive kick off event where community members from across Providence came together to share their ideas on key issues in the Comprehensive Plan.
  • Neighborhood Workshop Series: In collaboration with the Providence City Council, we hosted a community workshop in every PVD Ward in summer and fall 2023.
  • On the street: We joined over 50 community events to share information and gather community ideas, including block parties, farmers markets, and community meetings in every neighborhood in Providence.
  • Online: In 2022 and 2023, we gathered over 2,000 community responses to two online surveys, which were available in several of the most spoken languages in Providence.

In Spring 2024, the community engagement process transitioned from feed-in to feedback. The Department of Planning and Development unveiled draft Comprehensive Plan proposals, crafted based on input received thus far, and asked for community feedback. Feedback was gathered in three ways:

  • Public comment at monthly City Plan Commission (CPC) meetings, including a CPC public hearing on the full draft plan on June 18th, 2024. After CPC approval, multiple public hearings were also held by the City Council, before their approval in November 2024.
  • Feedback shared directly via email to planning@providenceri.gov
  • Attendance at one of the 5 drop in feedback events at local libraries in late April, early May 2024:
    • East: April 29, 4-7:30pm @ Rochambeau Library​
    • North: May 2, 4-7:30pm @ Wanskuck Library ​
    • Downtown: May 4, 10am-2pm @ Providence Public Library
    • South: May 7, 4-7:30pm @ Knight Memorial Library​
    • West: May 8, 4-7:30pm @ Olneyville Library
