The City is dedicated to promoting equal opportunity for all citizens and ensuring full inclusion for individuals with disabilities. We strive to make public programs, services, and facilities accessible to everyone by modifying our facilities, policies, and practices as needed.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that protects individuals with disabilities, ensuring equal access in public spaces, employment, government services, and telecommunications. This law aims to provide individuals with disabilities with the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
Modifications to Policies and Procedures
The City of Providence will generally make reasonable modifications to its policies and procedures to ensure that individuals with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in all meetings, services, programs, and activities.
The ADA does not require the City of Providence to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its:
- meetings
- services
- programs, or
- activities or impose undue financial or administrative burden.
Effective Communication
The City of Providence will generally, upon request, provide auxiliary aid and services leading to effective communication for qualified individuals with disabilities so they can participate equally in City of Providence meetings, services, programs and activities.
Such provisions may include qualified sign language interpreters, documents in large print or Braille, and/or other methods that will make information and communication accessible to people with speech, hearing, visual, or other sensory-related impairments. The City of Providence will not place a surcharge on individuals or on any group of individuals with disabilities to cover the cost of providing auxiliary aids and services.
Requests for accommodations or modifications should be directed to the Nondiscrimination Compliance Coordinator at least two weeks in advance.
