PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Jorge Elorza today announced that the Providence School Board Nominating Commission is seeking qualified applicants to serve on the Providence School Board.
“Serving on the School Board is a great opportunity to be an impactful part of the experiences of Providence youth,” said Mayor Elorza. “Working collaboratively with partners across our community, the School Board can help center the student voice in the transformational changes we are seeking in our schools. I encourage those committed to continuously improving our education system and supporting our families to apply today.”
Members of the School Board help to establish a policy that guides the Superintendent and future Turnaround Superintendent in the administration and operation of the schools, monitor progress towards direct goals and engage the community in supporting schools. Each School Board member is appointed to three-year terms, staggered to have three positions up for renewal every year. School board members whose terms are expiring may apply and be considered for reappointment. This year’s applicants are being considered for appointment to a term beginning in 2020 and ending in 2023.
The School Board application deadline is 4:30PM on Friday, December 13, 2019. The job description, application, and more information is available online.
The School Board Nominating Commission will conduct a public forum with selected applicants at the Providence Career and Technical Academy (PCTA), 41 Fricker Street, on December 17, 2019 at 5:30PM. The Commission then makes recommendations to the Mayor and the Mayor’s school board nominees are reviewed by the City Council.
