Mayor Brett P. Smiley announced today the City is accepting applications for the 2025 Mayoral Fellowship Program. The competitive program offers an exciting and creative way for undergraduate students and recent graduates to earn first-hand experience in the executive branch of city government. Mayoral fellows are placed in a city department based on their background, stated interests and suitability for a given office. They will work on high-impact projects designed to improve the quality-of-life for Providence neighbors.
“The Mayoral Fellowship Program provides college students and recent graduates with a unique opportunity to work directly within local government,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “Fellows gain valuable, hands-on experience while contributing to projects that have a direct impact on Providence. After completing the program, many of our past fellows have gone on to pursue careers in public service, continuing their work to make a difference in the community.”
Mayoral Fellows will learn valuable skills and gain real-world experience in a fast-paced public service environment to prepare them for their careers. Former fellows have worked in a variety of departments, including Healthy Communities, Planning and Development, Sustainability and in the Mayor’s Office, each offering a unique experience.
“My experience as a Mayoral Fellow gave me an incredible opportunity to see how the City of Providence functions,” said Eden Jutras, now serving as Mayoral Advance, who previously served as a Mayoral Fellow in the Executive Office in 2023. “I was able to work on meaningful projects that had an impact on the community, while also having the chance to engage in unique experiences, like participating in the Pride Parade. I highly recommend the Mayoral Fellowship Program to anyone interested in public service, as it played a significant role in shaping my career.”
The 10-week program offers participants a $3,000 stipend as they work under the direct supervision of a Department Director. The program also accommodates students interested in participating for academic credit.
The 2025 Fellowship will begin on Thursday, June 5 and end on August 15, 2025. Applications are due by May 9, 2025, and may be submitted online at: https://jobs.providenceri.gov/mayoral-fellowship/
