Mayor Brett P. Smiley and Providence Fire Department Chief Derek M. Silva today announced the implementation of the Providence Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services Bicycle Unit. This specialized unit within the Providence Fire Department began in mid-August in alignment with the City’s efforts to provide preventative emergency services and help residents struggling with substance use get connected to recovery resources.
“This program is a strong step in the right direction, providing residents better access to services and making public safety officers more accessible in our community,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “Whether it’s giving basic first aid support or making Narcan more accessible in emergency situations, our officers are helping make Downtown safer for the many residents, students, workers, and visitors that traverse through it every day. I am proud of the community-oriented approach we are taking to improve our public safety strategies.”
The pilot program for the EMS Bike detail will continue through mid-October, working the Downtown area Monday through Friday 12PM-4PM given the high volume of people in the area at that time. Firefighters participating in this program are focused on providing preventative emergency services, overdose prevention and intervention, and public education. Through this program, officers are providing Narcan kits containing nasal Narcan, protective gloves and information on PVD Safe Stations for those looking to enter recovery programs. The EMS Bicycle Unit is also equipped with an AED, oxygen, IV and over-the-counter medications.
“Our goal is always to provide our residents with efficient, timely services and the best care possible during emergencies– this EMS bike detail is helping us better accomplish those goals,” said Fire Chief Derek Silva. “By having firefighters accessible Downtown during peak hours, we can quickly provide preventative or basic care services and allow our rescues to focus on other calls around the city that require hospital transports. This program is helping us build a more efficient department, while also offering people the chance to engage with our firefighters on a personal level.”
This program is part of Mayor Smiley’s commitment to building strong relationships within the community to improve and increase public safety.
